My daughter loves the wireless Disney Spotlight microphone and the iPad app that goes with it! It is SO easy. Download the app from iTunes, enter the microphone code, plug the wireless receiver into the iPad, drop a battery into the microphone and your child is ready to be the next Miley Cyrus!
Since this product is designed for children, I was concerned that internet access would be required to use the product. We have internet access turned off on my daughter's iPad since Apple's parental controls are poor. Although the internet is required to register the product (typically done by an adult anyway), your child will NOT need the internet to use the product once you have added songs to its library. A big star for that from Dad.
I had purchased another children's karake machine with a built in camera and TV monitor but it was big and heavy, and when I learned of the the Disney Spotlight microphone and app, it seemed like a superior solution and it is. The mic and iPad are a lot more portable and also don't take up storage space. The app uses the iPad 2 camera to record videos of the singer, if desired, and the song's lyrics show on the iPad screen in time with the music. The cavet is the iPad 2 camera will only be activated during songs that are made for the app due to music licensing issues. And of course, only songs made for this app from the iTunes store will show lyrics (99 cents each). On the positive side, the mircophone comes with a code for 10 free songs.
Speaking of lyrics, since I had purchased a couple of karaoke CD+G discs for the aforementioned karaoke machine that went back to the store, I had the bright idea of importing them into iTunes, then sending them to the iPad--lyrics and all. No dice. If you have a CD+G disc, you won't see the lyrics using the Disney app with the iPad unless you manually type in the lyrics yourself into iTunes. That reduced my 5 star rating to a 4 star rating.
BTW, I read the review that rated this item low due to distortion and then went on to say that she used a USB microphone and it worked fine. After reading that review, I tried a USB microphone with my daughter's iPad via the Apple USB adapter and it didn't work. Nor did the reviewer respond to my comment asking how a USB microphone works with the Disney iPad app. So I cannot say the low review is credible. Further, I didn't notice distortion when listening to my daughter's recordings with the Spotlight microphone.
In summary, I give this product thumbs up. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and my daughter loves it!

My9 year old is having a blast, I just wish she would remember to close her door! Perfect for just having fun, ours came with 10 songs and we purchased 5 more for $5. She hasn't gotten bored yet :)

Have really enjoyed this microphone and then the app for the iPad. My kids (6,9) and I (42) were singing and recording videos right away. The fact that it allows you to record video of you singing and then share it is what my kids love. Lots of recognizable songs if your family watches the Disney Channel. Would give 5 stars, but hoping it gets more than the 30 or so songs currently available.
